Making cotton candy is easy if you know the secrets!
Making cotton candy was a total disaster the first time (actually 3 times) I tried to make it. I ended up wearing more of it than was going into the bags and besides that I was spreading it all over the house too. Lesson one - don't make cotton candy inside the house if you want to stay married for long.
The "secrets" to making cotton candy without the mess!
So lets get started with the supplies to make great cotton candy:
Candy Floss Machine Flossugar, or floss sugar Plastic Bags Paper Cone Tie wrapper to seal plastic bags
Ok we are ready to go.
Note: you can make your own flossugar by using flossine and regular sugar, but in my opinion the quality and taste isn't as good as flossugar from the factory. The cost of flossine and sugar is quite a bit cheaper than premade but you get what you pay for.
Add the cotton candy sugar
Pour some flossugar into the center of the machine, not quite to the top of the spinner. Plug in the machine, and notice the two switches, one for the spinner motor, and one for heat to the heating element that melts the sugar.
Turn on the power for the motor and the heater switch. It will start producing the fluffy candyfloss soon. Ok relax, we are almost there. Make sure you keep your hands away from the spinner motor.
Let the candy build up in the bowl. Nothing makes a bigger mess than moving the paper stick around and around to collect the cotton candy. Just let it form in the bowl.
When the bowl gets about half full of fluffy floss, stick your paper stick into the space between the spinner and the bowl. Slowly lift out the cotton candy up and out of the bowl. Give it a little circular flick like this picture shows and slide it into the bag. Repeat until everyone is happy with their fill of cotton candy. Keep filling the spinner with sugar - slowly. You can do this while it is running or shut down.
Secret #2 - The pros fill the machine while it is running. This also reduces the mess and keeps the machine at operating temperature.
You Tube Video - Making Cotton Candy
Watch this video to see how a pro does it. This operator correctly lets the floss build up and then at the right moment takes it out. Don't rush and you will make the best stuff around. Notice the video is about 30 seconds long, and you get one nice serving on a good machine every 30 seconds generally.
One note: do not let your fingers go near the spinner. Grab the floss near the edge of the bowl. Then place the floss into a bag and seal it up if you do not want to use the paper cones.
